J.Crew Chief and American Express Invest in Warby Parker

Warby Parker, the hip purveyor of retro-style glasses, has solidified ties with two of its most prominent fans. Now the three-year-old startup can count Millard S. Drexler, the chief executive of J.Crew, and American Express as participants in its latest round of financing, which closed last month at $41.5 million. The two join an already expansive group of investors that includes General Catalyst Partners, Spark Capital, Tiger Global Management, Thrive Capital and Menlo Ventures....

People wearing Google's glasses are transported to a strange new world in which the internet is always in their line of sight. But for people looking at the people wearing those glasses, the view is even stranger — someone wearing a computer processor, a battery and a tiny screen on their face. In a sign of how acute the challenge is for Google, the company is negotiating with Warby Parker, an e-commerce startup that sells trendy eyeglasses, to help it design more fashionable frames, according to two people briefed on the negotiations who weren't authorized to speak publicly.

Call it a retail revival. After getting crushed by big-box stores during the 1980s and 1990s, mom-and-pop shops are enjoying something of a rebirth among U.S. consumers. Thanks to a little thing called the internet and the ubiquity of computing devices, consumers don't have to settle for more commoditized versions of their groceries, clothing or housewares. Between the corner coffee shop selling its dark roast across the U.S. and cheesemongers detailing the delights of Rogue River Blue to out-of-state shoppers, consumers can access the neighborhood store even if they move.
