Can You Up the Ante on Your Products’ Amusement Factor?

Ahhh summer. So much about it brings a smile to our faces: popsicles, suntan lotion, flip-flops, hammocks, beach balls, cookouts, sprinklers, watermelon, fireworks, sandcastles. Remember when it used to feel like summer lasted forever? Those 100 days stretched before you as a child interrupted only sporadically with complaints about being bored. But now the calendar seems to jump from Memorial Day to Labor Day in a flash, leaving us to reminisce about another summer gone by or make resolutions about what we’ll do differently next summer.

Kuhn Rikon, the No. 1 brand of cookware and cooking tools in Switzerland, wants its customers to remember the joy of summer all year long with its clever and amusing watermelon knife.

No, you don’t actually need this knife to cut into that juicy piece of fruit (which some debate is actually a vegetable), but how many other kitchen gadgets are in your cupboards and drawers that fit this same criteria? You just want this knife. It makes you smile. The Kuhn Rikon product development team thought of everything. The watermelon knife's features and benefits include the following:

  • easily slices through the largest of melons;
  • has an 11-inch serrated blade;
  • cleanly and safely slices through thick skins of cantaloupe, honeydew or watermelon;
  • made of high-quality Japanese carbon steel;
  • nonstick coating;
  • seed-shaped cutouts prevent sticking and help melon slide off the blade;
  • ergonomic handle is designed to help you maintain your grip while applying pressure to cut through tough melon skins;
  • safety sheath for easy storage and transport; and
  • red sheath, with its decorative seed-shaped accents, coordinates with the whimsical design of the knife.

Both fun and functional, this whimsical knife starts conversations at picnics and adds charm to your kitchen drawer all year. “Ahhh summer” it beckons.

Can you up the ante on any of your products’ amusement factors? Is there some ho-hum aspect of your product that could benefit from a bit of unexpected playfulness? Why not ThinkAbout that today and see where it leads you?
